Liverpool ramming not being treated as terrorism – police
The ramming of a car into a crowd of football fans in Liverpool on Monday, in which at least 47 people were injured, was likely not a terrorist attack, Merseyside Police have said.
The car ploughed through Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League victory parade on downtown Water Street. Police said the driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, has been detained.
“It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media,” Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims told reporters at a press conference on Monday evening.
“We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism,” Sims said.
According to the local emergency services, 20 people were treated at the scene and 27 more were hospitalized, including two with serious injuries. Four children are among the victims.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended the police and emergency services for their “remarkable bravery.”
“Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror,” he said in a statement. “Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”
